As a public service announcement I think this scam needs to mentioned. While you could encounter this scam at anytime during the year, tax season leaves potential victims more vulnerable.
If you aren't familiar with these scams, an example of one of them goes something like this.
The scammer calls to inform you that a lawsuit is being filed against you due to unpaid taxes and that you must pay a certain amount in order to prevent further adverse actions. If you refuse they threaten to involve law enforcement for your noncompliance.
They will sound very believable and will even provide a phony IRS badge number at the beginning of the call just like the real IRS does when you speak with them over the phone. If you aren't aware of this scam it can all sound really scary, and unfortunately many people fall for it.

If you do get a call like this, report their name and phone number to the Tax Inspector General for Tax Administration and the Federal Trade Commission.
